Top Bloke Fixes Top Gun
Some years back (well more than ten) there was a Golden Age in Sound Off competitions, which at its peak, had a top competition scene dealer, ABC Car Audio of Newbury, running a Best Of The Best contest.
To even enter, you had to be a badass.
They Called it Top Gun.
To win it was just supreme. It meant you were recognised and offered “we are not worthy!” prostrations from the lesser. It gave your team god-like status.
Now once upon a time all those years ago, a young geezer had been in the trade just a fortnight when he found himself at ‘Top Gun’. It blew him sideways with an ignition of passion that was to make him as sad a ‘lifer’ case as any we know, helplessly in the grip of car audio’s strange obsession. Now, with the same people but run by a new distributor, JL Audio and MTX are set to reassert their UK identity with a phat slab of attitude, along with which came the promise to inject some fun and glory into the trade. He speaks to you now…..
Hi, I’m Chris Bennett, the guy Rayner’s waxing so embarrassing about above, now working with the same brands but swapping Watford for the seaside. This was to let the top dealers amongst you know about our Top Gun Show. Inspired by the late (and sorely missed) Peter Prince’s original search for excellence in Car Audio, the idea is that all the best demo cars in the land come along to be judged loosely by experts and then by their peers. Initially, ten cars will chosen by Jacco Kaper of MTX, Steve Turrisi of JL Audio, a couple of hacks (Rayner & Hunt) and Lyndsey Web from The Milk Round PR who have done much stuff in motoring but not a lot yet in car Audio, so will bring sane taste to the initial selection. These ten will then be voted on by the attendees to find our Top Gun car.
The cars and the people are what will make it and we need your best. They don’t have to be monster installs and indeed, simple, crisp work with a good outcome is what’s going to be looked for. Ultimately, it’ll be about which car you would most like to get into at the end of the day and drive home in.
Here’s the Flyer for our Top Gun Show and Dealer Conference.
Having got Steve Turrisi captive for a few days, we have also decided to follow this Big Weekend by going on tour with the JL Audio Dealer and TA Community Evening thing we first did in the south. Only this time, we’re going further than the midlands and visiting the top dealerships in Newcastle, Glasgow, Runcorn in Cheshire and Cork in Eire. If Turrisi hasn’t died of it, we might even make him perform one more time at Heathrow the night before he escapes back to the US. Here’s what it’s all about.
JL Audio Presentation for consumers and dealers
Hosted by Celsus and JL Audio
Presented by Stephen Turrisi from JL Audio
If you love cars and music then this night is definitely for you!
“Great audio” is what we do and what we will always promote.
Understanding and hearing Great Audio is what has made many people like you want to have a superior sounding system in every car they own.
Until you hear Great car audio then you don’t know what you are missing, a bit like when you saw your first HD TV when you already had a perfectly good one back home.
Or so you thought!!
Overview: A ‘no-spin’ discussion about what makes a great audio system. We will discuss the ‘secret’ behind just about every JL Audio demo vehicle we ever produced (except one!). Topics will range from core system design, proper selection of products (amps, speakers, subwoofer…etc.), installation tips and suggestions, initial system adjustments and tuning techniques.
About your presenter: Steve has been active in the mobile audio industry since 1990, but his passion for music and electronics predate that by at least 10 years. Initially hired to organize stock rooms and keep the loo clean at a stereo shop, he worked his way into the South Florida competition scene by working with talented installers and top notch product. A ‘sponge’ for information, especially the answers to the most annoying questions such as “why” and “how”, Steve absorbed tips and knowledge from every source around him. After five years on the retail sales floor (and having worked up to store manager), he was hired at JL Audio to work in their technical services department. This put him in touch with not only a huge pool of questions from consumers and dealers the world over, but also in touch with the engineers. He began doing presentations that were focused on products, of course, but also on technical aspects of audio. It was clear then that this is what he loved to do. He now fills the role of International Sales Director as well as Senior Training Director. His odd sense of humor and comfort with being a ‘geek’ will certainly show you that Steve is a ‘one of a kind’ presenter.
Celsus will also have JL audio demo cars there that will give attendees the chance to listen to, and realise “Great Audio” happens by design not by accident.

All we ask is that someone takes it upon themselves to start a classic TA ‘Attendance Thread’ for each event as that’ll be the source of The List we’ll use to let you in. If you’d like to be there, go sign up. We support the RNLI and Air Ambulance causes and suggest an optional donation of £5 at the door. The OP of each of the four threads may well be favoured in some way! (No duplicating after 1st timed original post.)
