The 3kw SQ Sub With A Coil Half Its Width
Designed and developed over a four year period by a team of seriously review-decorated speaker engineers, the new ten inch Ultimo woofer from Morel was on show at the SEMA show. It was a hand built example, thus pre-production but we gather is part of the same research and development effort that saw the creation of the bigger Ultimo 12. (One of which is right here awaiting its turn at review.) It has a solid one kilowatt RMS power handling with three thousand watts as its peak figure. It has the most enormous 5.1 inch voice coil and uses a special set of suspension spider and top roll surround components for linearity. The cone is of thick Carbon fibre. The subwoofer is basically an up scaled version of the technology used in their Elate series of speakers. The ten will run in less than a cubic foot and the whole cone assembly can be replaced by a dealer if need be, without resort to a specialist speaker re-cone engineer. Which makes this the first ‘field-serviceable’ Sound Quality woofer we’ve yet seen. Nutty engineering. This was Morel USA’s first ever SEMA show and they felt the visitors were better qualified than at other shows and thus it was better business for them.
